In our new series we rediscover the great artists of the history of Korean popular music. Ranging from trot singers to folk rock stars to punk bands, we present one hit song from a chosen musician/band and then we take a look at the cover(s) of their song.
Our first competitor is Songolmae (송골매, in English: Peregrine Falcon), a very fine Korean rock band formed in 1979. They have made 9 albums until 1990 and came back after a 20 year hiatus in 2010 with their 10th studio record. Their original members included Bae Cheol-soo (vocals, drum, later became the group's guitarist), Ji Deok-yeop (guitar), Lee Eung-soo (bass) and Lee Bong-hwan (keyboard). In the picture above the person in the front is Koo Chang-mo who was the band's lead singer between 1981 and 1985.
Along with the beautiful I'll Love Everything (모두 다 사랑하리, 1982), I Happened to Meet Her (어쩌다 마주친 그대, 1982) is Songolmae's biggest classic. It is about a guy who accidentally meets the girl he's in love with. Astonished by her beauty, he can't say anything to her. Check out the live version of the song below:
The first cover is by the queen of Korean dance-pop, Kim Hyeon-jeong from 2005 and the second one is a powerful live performance by M4 on Yoo Hee-yeol's Sketchbook that was broadcasted only several months ago.
